The very first project I participated in had a clear and powerful mission: protecting the lives of firefighters before they entered a burning building.

Before firefighters can intervene in any structure fire, they must ensure that the environment is safe for their own teams. One of the critical tools they rely on are explosimeters—devices that measure the presence and concentration of combustible gases and vapours in the air. These readings allow them to determine whether it is safe to enter or whether the risk of explosion remains too high.

During my internship for the Bachelor’s Degree in Security at the Institut de Seguretat Pública de Catalunya (ISPC) and the University of Barcelona, I had the opportunity to work directly with Bombers de la Generalitat de Catalunya on a project aimed at strengthening the management and operational readiness of these essential devices.

Throughout the project:

🔸 We developed an improved framework for the control, monitoring, and operational management of explosimeters.
🔸 We covered 22 Fire Stations across Catalonia, including 11 professional stations and 11 volunteer stations.
🔸 We enhanced stock control and optimised the operational distribution of explosimeters to ensure availability where they were needed the most.
🔸 We implemented a structured maintenance cycle, guaranteeing that all devices were routinely checked, calibrated, and ready for deployment in real emergencies.

This project taught me that even the most technical tasks can have a direct impact on frontline safety—and ultimately, on saving lives.
